Apparently the word “chignon” comes from the French phrase “chignon du cou,” which means nape of the neck.

So the chignon is a bun but a bun is not necessarily a chignon smile

Chignons are generally formed by pinning the hair into a knot at the nape of the neck, but there are many different variations of the style.

I find La Wikipedia invaluable for things like this: El moño

Knowing what both a bun and a chignon are I would say chignon is the best translation.

Hola! May I suggest a change for your English translation? The chignon is the most elegant hairstyle. So I would put that "most elegant" before hairstyle.

depends,, I think it can be written before or after.... - gene, Jul 8, 2011
I agree, Sonrisa. The hairstyle most elegant? Sounds like from a poem.:) - Deanski, Jul 8, 2011
I agree, Sonrisa. It's pretty rare nowadays for adjective to follow noun, and I don't think it sounds good here. - galsally, Jul 9, 2011
