Is this concerning the joke about handcuffs and husband?

Probably no more difference than between (male) spouse and husband? I think that the only difference of significance is regional custom. I think that Heidita said that in Spain one term is preferred over the other, but, of course, both would be understood.

I believe Heidi told me to use mujer for Spain - Yeser007, Jul 8, 2011
and either for husband, no preference. - Yeser007, Jul 8, 2011
Watching AETR (set in Madrid) I hear marido and mujer most often. - galsally, Jul 8, 2011

I think they're the same.

Esposo = male spouse and marido = husband

The main difference is you can say "Esposa" to mean female spouse but you can't say "marida" to mean wife (it doesn't exist as a noun)

Esposa y esposo. Mujer y marido.

Can we use anyone at anytime? - engspanish, Jul 8, 2011
You mean either one--using anyone means something completely different. - lorenzo9, Jul 8, 2011
