A different meaning for "verga"?

A different meaning for "verga"?

I was reading about the festival of San Fermin on a Spanish website. It explained some terminology that is particular to that event. It used "verga" differently than defined here at Spanishdict.com.

Kikiis son los personajes de la Comparsa de Gigante y Cabezudos más simpáticos y los niños pamploneses tienen verdadera debilidad por ellos. Representan al cortejo de ediles y su misión es asustar y divertir al pueblo. Son seis figuras, armadas con unas vergas de espuma, que golpean y persiguen cariñosamente a los más pequeños.

I would guess that "armadas con vergas de espuma" means "foam swords", not penises. Anybody have an explanation? Mind you that this is from Spain, not Latin America, so they may have a very use of "verga".

WOW, that is so wierd. I assure you that in Mexico and Latin America verga not only has the sense that you allude to, but it's used in a really offensive manner.

Your guess as to the meaning from your quote seems pretty good to me.

Jer, your spelling of "wierd" is also "weird"... but know what is more weird? You click on "wierd" and it actually defines it! See: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/wierd :-) - cristalino, Jul 7, 2011
You are right,, Jeremías. Using that word in Mexico implies a very vulgar way of speaking. - Agora, Jul 7, 2011
Cristalino, thanks for your vigilance. And Agora, es la verdad, no? La oi antes solo como un maldición. - Jeremias, Jul 7, 2011

It would seem in this context it would mean, rather innocently, a "stick or pole"... it does have various nautical definitions too... confused See: como mástil

Hace unos dos años Hugo Chávez lanzó un teléfono celular barato para que la gente sin mucho poder adquisitivo lo pudiera comprar. Pero Chávez lo bautizó "Vergatario." Según él era un nombre adecuado ya que quiere decir "excelente" en Venezuela. Pero recuerdo bien que mucha gente se reía del nombre y hasta Chávez no pudo sino sonreir al anunciar el nombre. Jaja
