In a round about way, it means that you gave them no reason (cause) for firing you. (you didn't steal from them, destroy company property, et. al.) They may have had their own reasons (cause) for firing you, like they wanted to downsize, but you didn't cause your own dismissal.

Bottom line, you are elegible for unemployment benefits.

formalizing the dismissal could mean just about anything. In general, it would be assuring that the dismissal procedures followed company policy or labor laws. That could entail you signing documentation that you were given proper notification, signing for insurarnce transfers, that you returned all company euipment, confidentiality requirements, etc. Anything beyond a verbal dismissal and you just exit the company.

Despido sin causa = To fire.sack or dismiss someone without cause...by implication fair cause ie Unfair dismissal

Qfreed has given you a very good answer regarding the phrase: formalizar el despido which I cannot add anything to /improve upon in any way

I hope this helps wink smile grin
