compare sostiene/sosteniendo

Will someone please compare "sostiene" and "sosteniendo" in these two sentences? They seem to mean the same thing, but I'm confused on the technicalities.
La muchacha está sosteniendo el sombrero en su mano izquierda.
La mujer sostiene el teléfono con su mano derecha.

-La muchacha está sosteniendo el sombrero en su mano izquierda. The girl is holding the hat in her left hand.
-La mujer sostiene el teléfono con su mano derecha. The woman holds the telephone with her right hand.
In English is the same too.
