I can lose interest in studying quickly so when I find myself lagging I do things such as watching a movie I love dubbed into spanish. Or study the lyrics of spanish songs I listen to.

So i was wondering, what do you do to keep yourself motivated?

Correct spelling is "lose". Please capitalize "I". People are trying to learn English here, too. - pesta, Jul 2, 2011

Being in a foreign country with fear of going hungry is a great incentive to start learning that country´s language. At least it helped me survive in Russia.

What a hearty laugh I had! But nothing will be able to help me survive in Russia, except that the Russians are so forgiving of anyone attempting to use their language. - territurtle, Jul 2, 2011
HaHa! I'm sure that would motivate anyone! - katty90, Jul 2, 2011
That's about the best motivation I can think of :-) - GerdaD, Jul 2, 2011
"incentive"..."motivation". Interesting choice of words. jeje :) - GuitarWarrior, Jul 2, 2011
Territurtle, I agree - they are very forgiving. Many Russians told me that their language is a handful - 005faa61, Jul 3, 2011

I want to live in Spain in a few years time, so thats my motivation. When I have my negative thoughts and moments of self doubt, I just think about sitting in that bar by the beach - I soon get back to my studies then grin

Sounds like me! do you hope to be fluent (or near fluent) by the time you move? Or have good knowledge of the basics and become fluent once your out there? - katty90, Jul 2, 2011
I moved to Spain when I was 19 and didn't have a word of Spanihs, now I know loads :P - dewclaw, Jul 2, 2011
katty. I would love to be fluent but im not sure that is actually possible until you are totally immersed. If I can be at an advanced level - ie able to hold basic conversations and understand whats being said to me. Then I will be more than happy :-) - billygoat, Jul 2, 2011
I agree with you on that. I'm going to try and learn as much as i can on my own and then take the plunge and move. But all the Spanish speaking people I've met have been very helpful when they find out your trying to learn:) - katty90, Jul 2, 2011
this is a great place to learn - stick around! - billygoat, Jul 3, 2011

I had always been excited to get into high school so I could take Spanish classes. I became discouraged very quickly once I got into the class, however. After two years of the high school course I could hardly speak Spanish at all. I assumed that was my one and only chance at learning it and pushed the will to learn it to the back of my mind. Three years later, I started dating a man who was fluent in Spanish as a second language. Spending time around him got me itching to learn Spanish once again. I did not know how I was going to accomplish it, but I was determined. My search on the internet led me to this wonderful website. I love the fact that we are all here sharing a common goal. Hearing all of your reasons for learning a new language inspires me to do so even more. It is an exciting journey, and this website makes me feel like I do not have to go it alone. It is great! grin

Sadly, right now I can only say I'm fluent in 1 language. blank stare But, one day I want to be fluent in at least 3 (one of which is Spanish!). I think the Spanish language is beautiful. Nearly all of the songs in Spanish have some kind of message behind them. I only wish I could understand them entirely.

I want to be able to communicate to many different people one day. I don't want to have to rely on a translator for me to talk to someone --- that has no personality to it whatsoever.

Being fluent in Spanish, or honestly any language, makes a person more well-rounded. People who know more than one language tend to embody these characteristics: Determination (because learning another language has not shown itself to be an easy task wink), intelligence (because it takes a smarty to remember all the grammatical rules and vocabulary words), adventurous (because knowing another language opens doors to many more opportunities), and independence (because they want to be able to make their way in unfamiliar places with a whole new language).

I have family on my father's side who do not speak English. I would like to go to Puerto Rico and hold full conversations in their language. I would also like to talk to my father in his native tongue.

For a start, I'm intrigued by languages in general and I like learning languages. But I intended to start with Italian first, in spite of the fact that Spanish is the third most widely spoken language .Unfortunately, the schedule of the Italian classes didn't suit me at all, and so I decided to reverse the order. I don't regret it at all, but I still want to learn Italian as well. But it will have to wait now till I've got to a reasonable level in Spanish so as not to get both languages mixed up. Another reason for studying languages is that I prefer to read literature in the original language whenever possible.

One thing I found from studying Spanish is that I can catch words in Italian as well. (When I listen to Pope Francis' speeces). - GaryT, Jun 16, 2014

Making the choice to live in México is one heck of a motivator. I had the stupid idea that I could learn Spanish from the street, think again my friends. I took the challenge to come here to SD and try to correct my language vices and attempt to learn grammar. Yes I can communicate in my present situation but now finally the poor listener can understand me much better.

Teaching English as a second language has made me frighteningly aware

that my language skills are so inadequate in our multilingual and multicultural

Country. Therefore there is a desperate need to catch up to the real world.

I was immersed in a Spanish community at age 6. Ever since, I've developed an ear and an accent for the language. I had always wondered what natives were saying and how I could speak their language. At first, I was depressed and I was feeling down because I could never express my thoughts clearly in Spanish. But now, I've taken classes, listened to songs, engaged in conversations, and have read a LOT of books! What has helped me the most is SpanishDict, and I'm inspired to learn Spanish more than ever now that I've found this website!

Thank you everyone! smile surprised cheese smile grin shock excaim

I love studying in general but have always studied things related to work, mostly science or social science based.

I decided to take a break from all that and finally learn Spanish so I can join in the conversation in my sisters house, they are all bilingual but apart from my sister they all feel more comfortable speaking Spanish, and I would like to speak to some of her friends who do not speak English too.

I am finding this much more difficult than any of the science courses i have taken. After all so long as I can remember science long enough to pass the exam I can always look it up if/when I need to apply it.

Unless I want to spend the rest of my days looking up every other word I really need to learn and remember Spanish long term not just long enough to pass an exam or assignment.

Being able to speak to people in a different language is very inspiring. I had a long series of conversations today while volunteering to help sell fireworks for a fundraiser for the girls high school basketball team one of my daughters used to play on. One of the volunteer team mothers was very nervous because her English wasn't great, and she was very pleased and surprised when she heard me talking to some of the customers in Spanish. I wound up talking to her and her daughter in Spanish for most of the morning. I still think it's cool to be able to communicate with people you've just met in a way that makes them comfortable.
