Brake pads

Is there anyone who is versed in car vocab? I'm translating a report on brake problems, so I need to have accurate and appropriate terminology.

Here is an example of a sentence I need to translate:

"We tested the brake pads for squeaking or grinding noises on 15 customer complaint vehicles. Many of the brake pads were worn and one had a crack."

Thank you!

Actually if someone could translate the whole sentence, it would clear up a few things at once for me. Also, I've now seen brake pads translated in two different ways (pastillas/almohadilla de freno) - I need to know the more common (native!) terminology. - Shannon, Jun 29, 2011
FYI: I was just told by someone in the field that it's pastillas. Gracias! - Shannon, Jun 29, 2011

Are you testing only brake pads or pads and shoes?
