Seed in Spanish?

Seed in Spanish is semilla but pepita too? What that doesn't make sense in English we only have one word seed that is it.

There you go comparing Spanish to English. They are two different languages with their own characteristics. - 0074b507, Jun 28, 2011

Semilla is the seed used for sowing [the scattering of seeds]. Things that are sowed include oats and wheat.

Pepita is the seed of fruit...so the seeds you'll find within an apple.

This Wikipedia article makes them sound kind of interchangeable. For example, it says, "Semilla, simiente, o pepita..."

Yes, it seems confusing because there's only one word for it in English. However, just think about it. One major difference is that there are two words for "for" in Spanish, and only one in English. There are many more differences between the two languages...they're difficult to compare. grin

Very good question. I hope I helped smile

English has seed, pit, stone, kernel, etc. Why do synonyms seem odd?

I believe that pepitas are roasted pumpkins seeds. Semillas are all seeds.

Here is a picture of pepitas:

There is also the "seed" of an idea ie, when something is very new, i'm not sure how this translates into Spanish. Any ideas??? - honestabe, Jun 28, 2011

English we only have one word seed that is it.

In addition to those already mentioned by Kevin, there's "pippin" meaning the seed of a fleshy fruit.
