You could also say: ''El año que viene'' (next year) they mean the same thing in practice/reality

This is not correct. "Next year" is usually not the same as "the following year". For example:

This year is 2011. Next year is 2012. The following year is 2013.

It works the same way in Spanish:

Este año es el 2011. El año que viene es el 2012. El año siguiente es el 2013.

Is it correct to say "el año proximo" for 2012? - Rikko, Jun 27, 2011
Yes, I do believe so, but it should be "próximo". You also hear "el año entrante". - gintar77, Jun 27, 2011
People here normally say próximo año rather than año próximo. - lorenzo9, Jun 28, 2011

Correct me if I'm wrong.(Al) is a contraction for (a la). Año is masculine so it should be "el año siguiente".

el próximo año also works

"al" is a contraction for "a el." - el_piel, Jun 27, 2011
Thanks, I always screw that up. Makes more sense the other way around. - MattM, Jun 27, 2011
a el almost sounds like al...since you're just dropping the middle e sound, if that helps. - webdunce, Jun 27, 2011
"a la" does not form a contraction. You allways have to write (and say) "a la": a la semana siguiente, a la hora siguiente,... - LuisCache, Jun 28, 2011
