A Sunday reflection: Agree or disagree?

Hola, amigos. I hope it's Sunday where you are, otherwise the title makes no sense wink

I figured I would ask this question to the SpanishDict community because it is so diverse. It has people of all ages and living in all places of the world.

Recently, someone said, "The newspaper is dead." I was like, "Wow. That's pretty gutsy to say!" As I thought about it, I considered whether this person is right.

Nowadays, our tools for getting news include the Internet, our E-readers, Twitter, and text alerts on cell phones. These tools, especially the Internet and Twitter, are updated frequently, making them ideal for getting news. By the time we get the newspaper, the story has evolved into something else than what the paper is reporting.

So tell me, amigos...in your opinion, Is the newspaper dead?

In my opinion not yet but the newspapers seems to be going in that direction because of the freely availablility of the news through many other sources eg The Internet, radio, television.

If someone wants up to date (current) news and information about some matter of national or international interest s/he is more likley to be able to obtain it through the internet or the radio and television than through newspapers which can be out of date by the end of the same day for which they were published eg Daily express 25th June 2011

However if the owners and /publishers manage to create a niche in the market for their newspaper and a reason to buy it other than simply to keep up with the news they may succeed in keeping the newspaper industry alive.

Many newspapers are already available online because many savvy owners and editors have realised that any hope of them continuing will in this form where the news can be updated and corrected by the minute if necessary.

These are only my views people are free to disagree with them, in a respectful manner and I won't take offence lol wink smile tongue wink tongue rolleye grin

Newspapers are most definitely in their death throes here in Norteamérica, especially in Estados unidos.

Since I have spent a good portion of my life in the publishing business -- and -- in computers/internet, I see the effects from both sides.

I wholeheartedly celebrate the arise of electronic media. And although, I personally have been a lover of everything paper since my earliest childhood memories (before age of four!), I understand that we will be better off without print media, just as we are better off without clay tablets.

However, in the immediate present, the news here in Estados unidos is no longer "news." Journalism is dead and buried here. Which means we have been sent back to a sort of "dark ages" where we know little of the reality surrounding events in the world.

It is just too expensive to keep a full staff of reporters doing in depth research on international and domestic topics. The result is all media: print, television, internet, cell phones, et al. are becoming little more than uninformed "opinion" calling themselves "news."

Those here who are fluent in many languages, and even those who simply wish to learn a language other than their native language, are doing the single most important thing possible to keep themselves better informed during disturbing (para mí) information transitions.

I applaud you and wish you every success in your continuing intellectual endeavors!

I have read a few articles which discuss the idea that the newspaper industry is a dying industry, often citing dramatic losses in profits from one year to the next. I think that because of the internet, the niche that newspapers once held has been steadily contracting.

To be fair, however, I don't think that newspapers have done much in the way of making themselves relevant. Instead of improving the quality of their content, most have instead chosen to bolster sagging revenues by dedicating more and more space to advertising.

Unfortunately, I have also read reports which predict the same grim future for books. That is that with the advent of so many online and digitized resources, many expect the book industry to go the way of the dinosaur, too. I am not sure as to whether either of these predictions will prove to be valid, but in my own opinion, it would be a terrible loss. It may be that I am just old fashioned, but there is just something about being able to have a book or newspaper in hand that I prefer, something about being able to sit down and read it that back lit computer screens just can't approximate.

I agree with you Eddy about teh advertisiing revenue replacing serious quality content I think books will survive and outlive newspaper industry although this is only a gut feeling :) - FELIZ77, Jun 26, 2011

I work for a media company that owns radio, television, and newspapers. And we're doing all we can to change our business model, because the sad truth is this:

Newspapers = 8 track tape.

Newspapers are now more like magazines.

Los periódicos son ahora más como revistas.

And magazines survived the advent of all sorts of media.

If you have a bunch of old, outdated newspapers lying around (and who doesn't), you can always do this with them:

The "Papers" part of "Newspapers" is fading.

Reporting news in quality costs much money. People want free news.

News is now everywhere. Half of it is advertising. Soon all of it will be advertising.

.

Informes de calidad cuesta mucho dinero. La gente quiere noticias gratis.

Noticias están en todas partes. La mitad de ella es la publicidad. Pronto todo será publicidad.

In the Philippines, it appears that very few people buy newspapers now. However, the tabloids, which almost all are of the yellow journalism type, seem to be as popular as before because they are much cheaper and they cater to a particular type of readership.

It seems to me they're fading out alright, the circulation figures are much lower that even a decade ago. Whether or not they'll disappear completely, I don't know. It will probably take a while. Also, I see the online 'papers still adopt the traditional newspaper format, I wonder how long that will last? Old traditions die hard.

I agree that newspapers are dead. 100%... It's so last century. wink Why cut down all those tress and use all that ink, when better info is available online, and updated at the blink of an eye. "News" is a product that expires almost immediately anyways.

Out with the old and in with the new!

My roommate has about 80 papers that she delivers to seniors. Many of them are older and don´t even have a computer. So no, in my opinion there is still value to being able to receive the daily newspaper. For them, it is cheaper than the new technology which they don´t want to learn anyway. For them, to read the obituaries and know they are not listed makes their day!
