does the definition "regular" (soldier) work in Spanish?

Does the definition of a regular soldier (He was a regular in the army) hold true in Spanish?

In other words, can native Spanish speakers understand "eran regulares en el ejército."?

One native spanish speaker can understand the sentence "eran regulares en el ejército" it's ok.

If you talk about some soldiers, I can understand about soldiers that that soldiers have a half performance not a high range.
