Mi madre dijo a mí.

For practice I have written this. Correct me if you can, but please don't feel required. (My native language is English, but if spot some things wrong here feel free to correct my English as well.)

When I was a kid I caught a young shark. To me it was a great catch. While everyone else caught fish, I had caught a shark, the king of the sea. Yes, I know that it was a baby shark, but at the time I still felt proud. My mother, she said to me, "you're not allowed to keep a shark!" But I begged her, "mommy, please, let me keep the shark." Well, after what fel like hours to me, but in reality was minutes, she agreed to my proposition. Then we put the shark in the chest and later on we left.

When we returned to the house, I went to the chest to see my shark. But I didn't like what I had found. The shark died! "¡Oh no!" I said. To my mother I said "the shark has died!" My mother said to me "Well, yes, what did you think? That the shark would stay with us as a pet?"

I said to my mother, with tears in my eyes while looking at the floor: "Yes."

Edit: For some reason the site won't recognize my red font when I click "submit" so I've put in bold all of the corrections Coffeelate, gintar and Qfreed have made. Thank you so much Coffee, Gintar and Q.

Thank you so much Qfreed, but are you sure it is Sentid? I thought all negative commands used the subjunctives. - Fredbong, Jun 23, 2011
You are correct, mu stupidity. And apparently it should have been sentíos if it was affirmative. - 0074b507, Jun 23, 2011
and there is no need for the accent on corregidme (I was figuring out which syllabe was stressed...daydreaming) - 0074b507, Jun 23, 2011

You cannot omit "alegando". alegar was a new verb for me to learn!

I don't get it. How is "alegando" being used here? I see nothing about claiming or complaining in the English translation.

In this case Alegando is not been used as claiming or complaining, but as presenting arguments to win my case. - ADOLFOTRANA, Jun 23, 2011

In the English version I had said, later on, that she agreed to my "proposition." In the original Spanish version I had not mentioned a proposition, only that she agreed.

It seems, though I may be mistaken, that alegar can be used to indicate that someone is putting forward a proposition or is making a case.

DRAE

  1. tr.

Said to someone, to summon, to bring support for your point, as evidence, apologies or defenses, something done, something said, examples, etc.
