They are both romance languages (ie they are related, in the same way that Spanish is related to Italian and French). However Catalan is not a dialect of Spanish. It is a completely different language.

Catalan is spoken in Catalonia (northeast region of Spain, includes Barcelona), Valencia (where it is called Valencian), the small country of Andorra, and a few other places. When I travelled to Barcelona I didn't quite understand how important a language Catalan was there. Everyone seems to be fluent in both Catalan and Castilian ("Spanish") but Catalan is from what I understand the "preferred" language, while Castilian is seen more as a language imposed from outside. All signs are bilingual. Maybe 50% of the time you can guess what written Catalan means if you know the equivalent Spanish. However the two languages sound quite different when spoken.

Catalan and Spanish have:

  • Different grammar
  • Different pronunciation
  • Different vocabulary
  • Different orthography
  • Different intonation

In short: they are different languages.

Catalan is spoken by about 11 million people, mostly in the north-east and east of Spain, while Spanish is the official language of 21 countries, it spoken by about 400 million natives, and nearly 500 if we include those who speak it as a foreign language.

Catalan is a Spanish language. What you call Spanish is Castilian Spanish, one of five official Spanish languages.

Catalan is also the official language of Andorra, the tiny country between France and Spain.

What about Catalonia? - Taghairm, Jun 22, 2011
Catalonia is part of Spain, which Lazarus already mentioned in his response. - gintar77, Jun 22, 2011
OK, I see. It just looked like a comment in isolation. Maybe if you´d written Catalan is also the official language, then it would connect better with the previous post. - Taghairm, Jun 22, 2011
Point taken. I will edit. - gintar77, Jun 22, 2011

They're basically the same thing, different pronunciation as well as vocabulary with the same roots.
