Yes, I think this is the best phrase. The downed dog is "el árbol caído" and kicking it would be "hacer leña". - gintar77, Jun 20, 2011

I'm not quite sure, but we have a metaphor that is a little similar.
"Fallen angel."
Cuando alguien es un angel caido, es una persona que fue fuerte o un lider en el pasado, pero ahora es un hombre enojado sin el poder que ha tenido.
Pero tambien puede signficar que es una persona que fue fuerte o un lider en el pasado que no es hoy, pero está intentando vindicarle a mismo.
Pero tambien significa una mujer que...eh....esta palabra es vulgar.
Pero, este frase está oido con poca frecuencia.
