What's the difference between tema and canción??

"Tema" (theme) is the main theme that the whole song is about, although sometimes the whole song is referred to as the "tema".

Music The principal melodic phrase in a composition, especially a melody forming the basis of a set of variations.
Movies, etc. typically contain a "theme song" which usually connects to the theme (story line or subject) of the movie.

"Tema" is a subject. [cambiar de tema = to change the subject]
"Canción" is a song. [canción de amor = love song]
I see in the "tema" definition here, it says "song". But if you wanted to say song, your best choice would be "canción".
