What exactly is the context for "make out"? In other contexts, that just means you get by (similar to "make do") or another is to gain something or some advantage (I went to Vegas and made out like a bandit). A more formal context would be "to perceive or discern". Can you make out our location through that dense fog? I couldn't make out what he was trying to describe.

One of the basic tenets on this language forum is that you provide context when asking for the definition/translation of a word or phrase.
