La exmujer

I was reading an interview with the English Musician Richard James (Aphex Twin) on the El País website (http://www.elpais.com). I was interested to see the word "exmujer":
... asegura no haber sido más prolífico en su producción musical por miedo a que su exmujer se quedara con el dinero que iba a ganar. "Ella me robaba".
I'm guessing it means ex-wife. Is there a more "Spanish" way to say this? Mi mujer pasada/primera? And how do you say ex-husband? exmarido?

You´re right. "mujer" can also mean "wife."
Esposa anterior ............. ex mujer/ex esposa
Esposo anterior .......... ex marido
And in many cases, "Esposo anterior" can be "prisionero perdonado" :- )
