They are synonyms since they both mean "to fight".
I once heard that "luchar" is physical fighting and "pelear" is not physical.
"Luchar" can be used for animals fighting, just so you know.
Pelear: Often one who is arguing/fighting, punching, kicking, hair pulling, you name it, willingly or accidentally involved in an argument, altrication.
Luchar: Often would mean to "work extra hard" to overcome life's obstacles, i.e., a patient "fights for his life ("lucha por su vida") or a person who fights to get ahead in life "lucha para trifunfar en la vida" (could be someone who works FT and goes to school FT and has an part-time job, a wife, kids and still volunteers in the community - this is a person who "fights" or "persona luchista".
Yes, they both mean to fight. Fight for your live, fight for your rights, fight for your love and so on.
pelear is to fight physically with someone and luchar is to fight / struggle with something like a disease.
As coffeelate said, to fight for your rights, so in this case it is translated to "Struggle."
I have never heard "Lucha" in reference to animals fighting, but "wrestling" is "La lucha libre."
