What does "maya" mean when used with respect to water cisterns in Nicaragua?

If you are building a cistern, and typically they are built of concrete, the reinforcing wire used in the form would be the "Malla " pronounced like "maya"

Maya is also an adjective, so it can be used with anything relating to Mayan culture. In this case, "La cisterna maya."
