I did not realize that Spanish was serviced in such a way. Is that where English butler comes from? ;-) ("made") - danrivera, Jun 16, 2011

Juan Valdez in 762 A.D. He was having trouble sleeping one night and said to himself, «if I can't sleep, I am going to make sure that no else can either. So he created this **** language that is keeping me up nights.»

Now you don't really believe that one person created a language or that one just appeared overnight. Even modern day computer languages evolve and mutate, die in one form to resurrect themselves in another.

You forgot to explain how Juan Valdez managed to force so many millions of people to speak such a crazy language over English, originally the world's mother tongue. - lazarus1907, Jun 16, 2011
Well, not just this world. One only has to watch Stargate to see that even in other galaxies everybody speaks English. Juan Valdez really messed things up big time! - lazarus1907, Jun 16, 2011

I've heard that a descendant of Juan Valdez is planning to create a new language, even worse than Spanish, so get ready!

Actually, English is the only language spoken on the planet. Walt Disney hired actors to pretend to speak other languages and placed them at various tourist destinations around the world as part of the expansion of Disney Planet, the world's largest theme park. The differences in clothing, appearance, food, architecture, and music were put in place at the same time, soon after Walt realized that dressing people up as giant talking mice was a little too obvious.

God. Tower of Babel

Hmmm that's quite interesting. According to the Bible God scattered humans across the Earth and "confounded their language" so they couldn't understand each other. I know we have a number of Christians here, surely learning a foreign language is going against the will of God and therefore an un-Christian thing to do?

Just thought I'd better edit this to indicate that my tongue is firmly in my cheek writing this wink

Qfreed is only partially correct.

Juan Valdez, whose full name was Juan Valdez Catalan de Sancho Pancho (there were no tildes in those days), was a grower of coffee beans in the ancient area know as Iberia. He became tired of banging people over the head with rocks to conduct his business transactions, and fell upon this idea of making sounds with his mouth to communicate.

He prospered with his new communication sounds and they came to be known as "Catalán" and thus, the tilde was born. With so much success, he then decided to expand his business and created "the oldest profession in the world." With so much notoriety and bordelos everywhere, a group of puritanical geeks decided to kill him and "save the world."

At this point, Juan Valdez Catalán de Sancho Pancho, who knew he was in deep caca, changed his name to Brígido Español de Petra to cover the posterior part of his being.

Eventually, Señor Bígiro was caught and his "goose was cooked" in a local town square. His faithful followers, who now knew how to effectively babble while using the communication sounds of "Catalán," secretly changed the name of his sounds to "Español," thus preserving the communication sounds and memory of their founder, Sr. Brígido Español de Petra.

The End

I think the reason was the Goths, the Visigoths and the Vandals. Especially the Dictionary Vandals who now in the 21st century have become computer savvy and hacked our site.

No, the real reason is that all languages change all the time. England hasn't had any Vandals in the last 900 years, and you wouldn't understand the English spoken in England then. - lazarus1907, Jun 16, 2011

A long time ago a lot of people spoke Latin. Then one day they separated for some reason. After a while the people who separated started speaking differently than their ancestors.

The evolution of the various languages that sprung from Latin is a long one. Etymology is a word you should google if you have a particular word in mind. However the origins of Spanish are more complicated than I've made them sound as various words are borrowed across all cultures.

Se que las Guardias Civiles solia advirtió a los catalanes que ¡hay que hablar en cristiano! durante el periodo franquista, pues supongo entonces que el Español debe haber sido creado por el hijo de dios

I know the Gurdia Civil used to warn Catalans "You must speak Christian!" during the Franco period, so I guess Spanish must have been created by the son of god wink

As for the "maid" she's neither here nor there grin
