Exams tomorrow... any last minute advice?

Exams tomorrow... any last minute advice?

I've got my interpreting and sight translation exams tomorrow... I've done lots of studying and revision but still feel I could have done with more time to prepare! These exams are so hard, I just really hope I pass!

..

Does anyone have any last minute advice?? Maybe on exam techniques, feeling less nervous, or some last-minute revision.

To feel less nervous, make sure you get a good night's sleep and eat a fulfulling breakfast in the morning. Get to the exam testing area early so you aren't freaking out and rushing to get there. Never take the risk of being late. Also, if you get there early, you can ask your teacher any last minute questions you have.

If you have a written portion, make sure you check your work! Also, skip over the ones you don't know. Go back to them after you've finished the rest.

And, finally. Be confident. You've studied all you can...you know this! You can do it!!

Best of luck! Let us know how they go.

If you have revised hard and well, which I'm sure you have, then what you do is simply say to yourself - "I've done all I can and if not, I deserve a break because of the effort I've put in.

Don't stay up late revising, have a nice meal and maybe invite a friend round for a movie (don't stay up late though, mind) or whatever relaxes you e.g listening to your favourite music or dancing around you bedroom to Rihanna (that's what I do!)

And so you're not only having a nice evening you're also reassuring yourself that you have done enough work and that you are going to do absolutely brilliantly the next day - It's all about tricking the mind wink

And good luck!

Hi Amy, I have been told that in order for interpeters to feel more self-confident and less stressed they have to stand firmly on both legs without wobbling and shuffling your feet. And also, if you speak loud enough your brain will interpret is as self-assurance of its owner wink

Good luck. I know that oral exams do stress out. I have one on Sunday so I know how you feel. We can do it wink Vamos!

In my opinion last-time revision never helps :-S - bomberapolaca, Jun 15, 2011
Small correction bomber - "I did one on Sunday" - the present perfect in English never has a specific time reference. - ian-hill, Jun 15, 2011
Gracias bomberpolac! Good luck for you in your oral exam on Sunday as well! :) - amy_moreno, Jun 16, 2011
Thanks, I will also have a sight translation and a consecutive interpretation exam. - bomberapolaca, Jun 16, 2011

Sonrisa has provided excellent advice. There is not much to add to it except to remember to breath and relax as much as possible. When we are nervous, we tend to take more shallow breaths, which is not very helpful. Just relax and know that you will do well.

I wish you the best and I'm sure with all of the effort and studying you have put into this that you will do well! smile

Take a deep breath - hold it - let it out slowly. Now imagine yourself acing your interpretation and translation. Doesn't it feel good? See yourself as a master of the material. You've prepared yourself well - now, as Nike says, just do it!

Positive thoughts coming your way.

Gracias for the good luck wishes! I've been doing lots of interpreting and sight translation pratice, especially concerning my specialist area (Law)... I still feel like I would like another couple of days to practice, though! - amy_moreno, Jun 15, 2011

1 Get plenty of sleep !

2 Relax and read the questions carefully making sure that you understand the instructions fully and attempt all the questions since the first 50% of the marks which can be awarded for any of the questions are easier to obtain than the last 50%!.

3 Allow, preferably at least 10 minutes to re-read /check your answers. Sometimes writing at speed can make us inattentive to small details that could lose us valuable marks!

4 Don't hold an inquest in your mind afterwards: worrying about what you should have said/written as responses to some of the questions. I did this at Uni with my one exam in Early Years and worried myself silly but still passed afterwards The course was 98% coursework anyway. It is probably better, for the same reason, not to discuss the answrs with friends but to.....

5 Go and enjoy yourself afterwards! eg watch a favourite video join up with some friends and go out for a drink eg coffee,/tea have a walk Doing something with others is probably more relaxing as long as you can talk about other things apart from exams lol Unless you need time to sleep or like being on your own, its better to have company since most people would worry more about the exam if they remained alone having friends around can take your mind off what you have just been doing

There is life after exams no matter what the result is ! wink

Three pieces of advice:

  1. Breath in.
  2. Breath out
  3. Trust yourself. You know the information.

Oh, I know what that is like... I'm sure you'll do find because you ARE concerned and worried! As so many have already said.... try to RELAX!

On the oral exam, do not rush with your answers! If they aren't timed.. but they shouldn't be.. right? I usually make mistakes if I don't THINK things through enough before I answer.

I doubt you have multiple choice written exams for this, but if you do.. and you just can not figure out which answer it is... even after trying to eliminate the obvious... pick C! It helped me on my finals! tongue rolleye

Good Luck! You'll have to let us know how you did!

Rule 1 relax. Rule 2, relax.

When in doubt refer to rule 1

Find a way that works for you to clear your mind and do your best to but the goblins of apprehension behind you. As Ian says they want you to pass.
