Is it true you can say Que tanto instead of cuanto to say how much?

Depending on who you're talking to the two phrases aren't always interchangeable, however in English they could both mean "how much."

Cuanto cuesten las manzanas? = How much do the apples cost?

!Qué tanta cuesten las manzanas! = Something like "look how much the apples will cost!" But more directly translated as "the apples would cost so much."

que tanto manzanas quieres means how many apples you want?

In some places it can mean that. However it would be *qué tanta" not que tanto because manzana is feminine and you are asking a question. - Fredbong, Jun 14, 2011
