In Mexico "te quiero" is the common and familiar way to say "I love you".

Like Guillermo says: "te amo" ( I love you) is mainly used as a poetic expression or in soap operas.

Supposedly, "amar" will be always stronger than "querer".

In school, I seem to remember being told that "querer" was used to imply boyfriend/girlfriend affection, where "amar" was used to imply a deeper sense of love, as in engaged/married couples.

Amar - strictly means "to love". Te amo - I love you.

Querer - means "to want" or "to love".

To be honest, I rarely see anyone use "querer" to express love. 99% of the time, "querer" is used as "to want". However, it's important to know that "querer" can mean both.

Good question. As qfreed said, try searching older threads --- they'll definitely help!

Hope I helped smile

I don't know what your location is, but I rarely see anyone use "amar". Only in soap operas. - 00e657d4, Jun 13, 2011
