I thought "déjalo" meant "forget it".

Déjalo en paz would be leave him in peace.

It could mean leave him alone (not her, that would be "déjala"), or it could mean "let him" if he is about to do something that someone is trying to stop.

For leave him alone (let him be, etc.) you could also say:

Déjalo quieto or Déjalo tranquilo or Déjalo en paz.

Hey! I need to study the Diction/Usage lessons from days long gone by, ha ha - bert1929, Jun 13, 2011

I am a beginner so may be wrong but my understanding is:

  • dejar = to let, put, leave, abandon
  • deja = He leaves/she leaves/you (Usted) leave, OR "you leave!" (imperative)
  • lo deja = He/she/etc leaves him/it, OR "you leave him/it!" (imperative)
  • déjalo = same as lo deja, but the object pronouns (lo) is suffixed onto the end of the verb.

So déjalo = the command "leave him". It would not mean "leave her" - that would be déjala.

Can you say déjalo/la by itself to say leave him/her alone?

I think so, but only if it is clear by context. - gintar77, Jun 13, 2011
