Civil Partnership & Civil Partner

Civil Partnership

Legally recognised partnership (sometimes called "gay marriage") between two people of the same sex)

..

From what I have read it seems to have different names in different countries (please correct me if any of these are wrong):

..

  1. Spain - unión civil
  2. Mexico - sociedad de convivencia; pacto civil de solidaridad
  3. USA - compañera doméstica
  4. Peru (new legislation to be introduced) patrimonio compartido

..

And, from what I've read, I think "civil parnter" can be translated as "pareja civil". Any other ways of saying "civil parnter" or "civil partnership" anyone knows of?

It would be great to read your input.

Mil gracias! smile

USA - compañera doméstica

I cannot speak for other countries, but in the USA, the legal union of same-sex couples is usually called a civil union.

The term "domestic partnership" does not carry legal status in most states and can apply to both same-sex and opposite-sex (non-related) couples who live together and support each other financially.

I failed to mention that same-sex civil unions are only legal in a few states. Thank you Sabor! - gintar77, Jun 13, 2011
Gracias gintar77! I found the "compañera doméstica" term on another forum, many thanks for the correction. - amy_moreno, Jun 13, 2011

I think Gintar77 is right but he does not make it clear that while there is legal recognition in a few states, in no way are the rights of partners in such unions preserved in the states which do not recognize them.

You mean legal recognition of civil unions (vice domestic partnerships)? In any case, you are right either way. :-) - gintar77, Jun 13, 2011
Gracias Sabor. :) - amy_moreno, Jun 13, 2011

- amy_moreno
