Question

How would you say the phrase "1.7 miles" in Spanish? For example would it be una coma siete millas or do you use punto instead of a coma? or perhaps una milla siete?

Also whether it is 1.7 or 1,7 is regional.

A decimal is expressed as either punto (period) or as coma (comma), the usage varying from country to country. In other words, the usage of these two symbols may be exactly the reverse of what we do in the USA.

4.52: cuatro punto cincuenta y dos or, if written 4,52: cuatro coma cincuenta y dos.

Dot countries: Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, United States (including Puerto Rico).

Comma countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Cuba, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Spain, Uruguay, Venezuela.

Here´s an interesting link on the use of commas and period in numbers. It seems that it depends a lot on what country you´re in as to which you would use.

And here´s another link. According to one of the answers there 1.7 miles would be uno punto siete millas or una milla con siete. I´m saying punto because I figure if anyone would say milllas instead of kilometros then they are in the U.S. or close to here so they would probably use punto.

Great question! I had never stopped to wonder that before and had forgotten that some countries would say uno coma siete.

In Spain, Argentina, Bolivia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Colombia, Cuba, Panama, Chile, Paraguay... (maybe I missed one or two) you would say "una coma siete millas"... if you were in a country where people use miles, since people might not be used to miles.
