This is the usual reason/purpose distinction of por/para:
Por ser un chismoso, nadie... = Because he is a gossipmonger, no one...
Para ser un chismoso, nadie... = In order to be a gossipmonger, no one...
In theory, both prepositions can be used, but one of them is more likely to fit in this context, but the other one is not impossible.

Por... in this case works as "because he is"
