How many languages do you speak?

You can list the ones you are fluent in, as well as the ones you are learning, or even the ones you want to learn.

Edit: Since I asked the question, I suppose I should probably answer it, too. Jeje smile. I'm fluent in English. I'm learning Spanish -- I'd say I'm at an intermediate level. And then I'm learning Urdu, as well.

Native: American English

Functionally fluent (can converse without too much trouble): Spanish (trying to learn the Mexican dialect specifically)

Learning (can use to survive): Esperanto

Would like to learn: Nothing exactly is jumping out at me as something I really want to learn, but I may pick up some German later on for fun. However, my Spanish teacher (who's a linguistic nut like me) gave me an interesting idea for a career in that I could record languages that are in danger of dying off so that they wouldn't be lost. This idea appeals more to me than learning really any national or constructed language (besides the ones I've got now tongue wink), so maybe some language that's, for lack of a better term, "endangered."

Mother tongue - English (Scottish English)

Fluent - Spanish (Latin American)

..

Used to speak at an intermediate level, now can read it but can hardly say anything at all! - French

..

Basic level - British Sign Language

Basic level (I can understand bits of it but can't say/write much) - Portuguese and Italian

I keep thinking I should bring one of my flagging languages up to a workable level, but can't decide which one to choose. I'm deciding between French and Portuguese, I think. smile

I'm a native English speaker, I was spoken to in French as a child and studied it in college, I studied Italian and used it quite a bit twenty years ago. Four years of college German barely got me going when I moved there but I improved after living there awhile. Now I have put them all away to concentrate on Spanish...because I am not smart enough to keep them all going at the same time. Spanish, for me, is the language that I have have fallen in love with, and the one that I can use on a daily basis. Or hope to use, when I get good enough!

I am a native English speaker

Tá Gaeilge liofa agam freisin (I speak Irish fluently too).

I speak Spanish reasonably well (I like to think I do anyway tongue wink)

I am just starting Russian, still trying to get my head around the alphabet though!

I would like to learn French, German and Italian, I studied all of these for a year each in primary school but I've never got round to picking them up again yet.

Is "Irish" called Irish? Or Gaelic? Is there a difference? - SonrisaDelSol, Jun 9, 2011
Gaelic is a Celtic language from which 3 languages Irish, Scottish gaelic and Manx descended. But Irish (or Gaeilge as we call it) is the specific type of Gaelic language we speak. - fi123, Jun 9, 2011
Thank you for clarifying :) - SonrisaDelSol, Jun 9, 2011
You overlooked the continental Celtic language that is spoken in Brittany, France: the Breton language or Brezhoneg - GerdaD, Jun 9, 2011
Your Welcome :). I know there are other Celtic languages but I was only referring to the "Q" Celtic languages as thats where Irish comes from. Breton is "P" Celtic. - fi123, Jun 9, 2011
I used to work with some folks from Connemara. Irish was spoken quite frequently. That's when I learned N O T to call it "Gaelic". - Beatrice-Codder, Jun 10, 2011

Fluent/native English

Learning/beginner Spanish

A few words remembered from school French, I could order a coffee and a basic meal and maybe order a train ticket. A very few words of Greek, ordering meals, please/ thank you, yes and no. Things I picked up on holidays when my sister was living there. I couldn't read Greek though, the alphabet defeated me.

Basic British Sign Language, a bit rusty but I got to level two and can remember a bit.

About 5 words in Irish my Dad taught me many years ago smile

Oh and I love you in whatever dialect my Zambian boyfriend spoke when I was 18. :D

Goodness me I know more than I realised, there is hope for me yet.
