Come or cóme

Come or cóme

I am working on an online spanish class, so I am having to teach myself. For an informal command my book says to use the third person singular form of the verb, so for comer it is come, but on one of my online self corrected activities the answer was cóme. Is there a rule that I am missing that requires the accent mark on the o?

Thanks!

It would be "come" unless you were talking about something specific, for example "queso". In this case you would add "lo" to the end and write an accent where the original stress was before, making it "cómelo."

ah okay! That makes sense. Does this work for the majority of commands when referring to something specific? - ajeash1, Jun 8, 2011
When you add le, lo, la to the end of the verb form you should still pronounce it the same way and if the accent is not as per the rules you should write it! - UnaPalabra, Jun 8, 2011

No, Placing an accent mark on the "o" would be superfluous as the stress falls there by the normal rules. Also there is no diacritical usage that requires it, nor is it a interrogative or exclamatory pronoun.

If it were a command and pronoun were to be attached then the "o" would need an accent mark. Cómela [usted].

vos comés (present indicative)

vos command

comé vos
