Confusing English Words Challenge 19

Algunas palabras en inglés pueden crear confusion en los principiantes.

Some words in English can be confusing for learners.

This one is to practice the words - even so / even though

Both native Spanish and English speakers may answer - but write both Spanish and English sentences.

I would appreciate some help in checking the Spanish sentences.

Agradecería una cierta ayuda en la comprobación de las oraciones españolas.

I will "accept" the best effort after about a week

Every attempt will get a vote.

NOTE - we would normally need 2 sentences in both Languages that illustrate how the the following are used.

a) even so

B) even though

Futher explanation as to the different meanings may be given.

Please do not suggest new words.

As in English these two conjunctions can be expressed in several ways in Spanish.

even though aunque, aun cuando

Cochabamba are champions even though they lost six matches.

Cochabamba es campeones aunque perdieran seis partidos..

I can not understand Spanish even though I try hard.

No puedo entender el español aunque me esfuerzo.

even so aun así, no obstante, sin embargo

Cochabamba lost six games even so they are champions.

Cochabamba perdió seis partidos sin embargo son campeones. (however)

Even so

Meaning: EVEN SO means ‘despite what has just been said’.

Example:

The boy had a broken ankle, but even so he managed to get to the hospital without any help. (note: in this example, EVEN SO is in the same sentence as the idea that it follows – here, that idea is the fact that the boy had a broken ankle. However, it needs to follow the word ‘but’ or another conjunction that joins two main clauses. We can’t use EVEN SO in a dependent clause. It needs to be at the beginning of a main clause.) . The company was growing quickly. Even so, the director was careful not to take on too many staff. (note: in this example, EVEN SO is at the beginning of a new sentence, and is followed by a comma. This is the more usual way of using EVEN SO. We can’t reverse the order of the sentences. In other words, it is incorrect to say ‘Even so, the director was careful not to take on too many staff. The company was growing quickly.’ This does not make any sense!)

. Even though

Meaning: EVEN THOUGH means the same as ALTHOUGH, but it is stronger in meaning.

Example: Even though it was snowing outside, he went for a walk in a T-shirt and a pair of shorts! (note: we can’t separate this into two sentences. In other words we can’t say ‘Even though it was snowing outside. He went for a walk in a T-shirt and a pair of shorts. This is because EVEN THOUGH is always at the beginning of a dependent clause, not a main clause. However, we can reverse the order of the clauses. We can say ‘He went outside for a walk in a T-shirt and a pair of shorts even though it was snowing outside’.) . The employees had to stay at the office until late in the evening even though they had finished all their work.
