Quebrar means to break?

Is this correct in spanish? El vaso se quebró, I use quebrar for break, I was taught to speak this way.

The glass broke to pieces = El vaso se hizo pedazos OR El vaso se hizo añicos.

Yes, quebrar and romper both mean to break so they could both be used here. I just thought that a drinking glass would break to pieces when broken, but it's not necessary to make that distinction.

I know that "romper" also means to break. I do not know which may be more appropriate in this sentence. They both may be fine.

I have thought that "quebrar" was more for use with breaking a bone, but I do not know if this usage is exclusive.
