Cannot view lesson

Question

Hola... I just signed up on this site today, and I cannot view Lesson 1. The error I get refers to the mv4 codec missing, see realnetworks for info. I use current IE9. DirectX is current.

Realplayer is current. I have the codec for mv4/MP4 in Realplayer and it is set to use realplayer for mv4/mp4 files, but it will not load from this site. IE is not blocking the add-on for realplayer.

The video will not play in the page or in realplayer, but it will download to realplayer. Any suggestions other than use firefox?

Also, changing to compatablilty mode does not make any difference.

I would suggest using Adobe Flash Player to watch the videos. You can download the latest version here. I don't know what video formats the videos are available in now, but when they were first posted they were in flv or swf format and you had to have a Flash video player installed on your computer to watch them. If you are actually downloading the files (not watching streaming video) I know that they are available in several video formats. There are usually plug-in's for players like QuickTime to watch Flash video, but why bother. Download an actual Flash video player.

Ok.. the "Auto Update" finished, but no difference. I un-associated real for mv4, re-associated VLC. This caused Quick time to take over, with the question mark on the icon, and still would not play.

I uninstalled Quick time, and got a box with the red x at the top.

I uninstalled and fresh-installed Adobe Flash and voila! now it works.

(It is using the flash player, and so far seems to be working just fine)

This might interest you. According to this you may want to try watching the downloaded lesson files with the QuickTime Player. Where did you download the podcasts in mv4/mp4 format? Did you use RealPlayer to download them at the BlipTv site? Did you download them at the iTunes site?

What do you mean by they show up as RealPlayer files? Do you mean that the file shows the RealPlayer icon? That could be happening because RealPlayer is your default video player or you downloaded the files using RealPlayer software. I also use the VLC player. When I download movies torrents (usually avi format) I see the files with the VLC icon on them. The only reason for that is that VLC is my default player or that I have opened a file with it and it uses the "open all similar files with this program" option.

Yes the file shows the real icon. I really don't know why Real grabbed it, but I though it would be no big deal. Currently Real is Auto-updating on another page I have open with lesson 1.1 so we shall see what happens. VLC is set as default for mv4. - cjm2175, Jun 7, 2011

That RealPlayer icon does not mean that the file is formatted to play only with RealPlayer. If it is Mv4/mp4 then any player able to play that format should be able to play the file. The icon only means that it will use RealPlayer to open it unless you - 0074b507, Jun 7, 2011
