I have not heard it before. We say to slave away (to work hard...like a slave) or the daily grind (work...the noun, not the verb) - webdunce, Jun 5, 2011
Hi Nelson - I have replaced your double quotes ( " ) so that your post works with IE. - ian-hill, Jun 5, 2011

The grind is the daily work schedule, usually boring, repetitive chores. It alludes to other idioms like "keep your nose to the grindstone" The grindstone slowly wears down the tool that it is shapening, eventually making it useless or in need of replacement. The analogy to your career is pretty close.

More appropriate is a mill stone used to grind cereal grasses. Slaves or beasts of burden where often used to turn mill stones. Samson, from the Bible, (once captured and blinded) is an example. It brings to mind scenes from Conan, the Barbarian, who was a slave that turned a mill stone for years, but in his case, it supposedly built up his strength rather than wearing him down.

Hi, Nelson.

Slave to the grind means that you are working hard and have no free time. You are a slave to the grind of work.

Example:

Come on, Tony, come out and have a beer with us....don't be a slave to the grind.
