Confusing English Words Challenge 18

Confusing English Words Challenge 18

Algunas palabras en inglés pueden crear confusion en los principiantes.

Some words in English can be confusing for learners.

This one is to practice 1 word. - (to) become

Both native Spanish and English speakers may answer - but write both Spanish and English sentences.

I would appreciate some help in checking the Spanish sentences.

Agradecería una cierta ayuda en la comprobación de las oraciones españolas.

I will "accept" the best effort after about a week

Every attempt will get a vote.

NOTE - we would normally need at least 3 sentences in both Languages that illustrate how the the following is used.

a) (to) become

Futher explanation as to the different meanings may be given.

Please do not suggest new words.

My attempt:

ponerse Después de algún tiempo, un ladrón se pone endurecido y pierde su sentido de la moralidad. After some time, a thief becomes hardened and loses their sense of morality.
volverse ¡De repente, ella se volvió muy nervioso! Suddenly, she became very nervous!
hacerse Por mantenerse al día con mis caminatas diarias y otros ejercicios que se hará más fuerte. By keeping up with my daily walks and other exercises I will become stronger.
llegar a serNuestros administradores, moderadores, y los hablantes nativos han llegado a ser muy querido para nosotros los estudiantes de inglés y español. Our administrators, moderators, and native speakers have come to be very dear to us learners of English and Spanish.
convertirse en Con un movimiento de su varita mágica, el vestido de Cenicienta se convirtió en un salón de baile vestido de azul. With a wave of her magic wand, Cinderella's dress turned into a blue ballroom gown.
transformarse en Las uvas rojas pueden transformarse en vino tinto. Red grapes can be turned into red wine.

I based my attempt on the following information which came from: link text and the SD on-line dictionary.

There are several different Spanish equivalents for the English verb "to become," depending on several factors.

Ponerse is followed by an adjective and indicates an involuntary physical or emotional change. (happy, sad, thin)

1 Me puse enfermo en Madrid. I got sick in Madrid.
2 Ana se pone roja cuando habla. Ana turns red when she talks.

Volverse is followed by an adjective and indicates a sudden, profound change. (boring, jealous, suspicious)

1 ¡Se volvió loco! He went crazy!
2 Julio se ha vuelto imposible. Julio has become impossible.

Hacerse and llegar a ser are followed by a noun or adjective and indicate a change brought about by effort. - (a teacher, a doctor) (old, difficult, stronger)

1 Me hice médico. I became a doctor.
2 ¿Es posible hacerse rico en los EEUU? Is it possible to get rich in the US?
3 ¿Llegarás a ser abogado? Are you going to be a lawyer?
4 Llegó a ser muy popular. He became very popular.

Convertirse en and transformarse en are followed by a noun and usually indicate a change to a thing rather than a person.

1 La condición se convirtió en una emergencia médica. The condition turned into a medical emergency.
2 La leche puede transformarse en queso. Milk can be turned into cheese.

From the SD online dictionary.

become = convertirse

verbo intransitivo

1 - hacerse (a teacher, a doctor)

Dakie - I like your English sentences. Bueno! Also, if I'm understanding occupations, the article is not needed. I would wait for a native though to be sure! :) - bandit51jd, Jun 6, 2011
native? you are a native!! aren't you? or Spanish native? I am a Spanish native jaja :) - Dakie, Jun 6, 2011
Oh, how embarassing, Dakie. I totally forgot you are a native Spanish speaker! Lo siento, por favor! :) - bandit51jd, Jun 6, 2011
And yes, I could have said: llegar a ser programador... convertirte en jugador...convertirse en doctor, but as I wanted to say great and profesional I had to add the article :). - Dakie, Jun 7, 2011
