Knowing when to use por v para in different situations comes with a lot of practice... many years infact! It is often more important to correctly learn when to use one rather than the other than to know exactly the reasonfor the practice. Many Spanish-speaking natives are able to use them correctly without knowing why por should be used in preference to para it just comes with experience

However, I would recommend you view Paralee's video lesson 3:6 on the subject if you want to understand some of the principal reasons why por rather than para is used in certain contexts
