Should I say "..para la día" or "por la día"

the sentance is "En el segundo día de mi vacacion el año pasado fui a la playa por/para la día"

Beatrice is correct ....it should be por rather than para to denote/indicate a duration of time!

''En el segundo día de miS vacacionES el año pasado fui a la playa por EL día"

= On the second day of my holiday, last year, I went to the beach for the day

Alternatively you could avoid the problem completely by changing the second part to

I spent the day at the beach'' so altogether it would be:

En el segundo día de mis vacaciones el año pasado pasé el día en la playa

= On the second day of my holiday, last year, I spent the day at (or on) the beach

I agree with Feliz & Julian on the use of pasar. To me, "fui a la playa por el día" sounds as if the trip to the beach lasted for a day.

I agree that "..... por el día" is the more correct of your two options, but the preposition here is not even necessary, ie: "....... fui a la playa un día."

"For" in both English and Spanish changes the meaning of the sentence. "Fui a la playa un dia" - One day I went to the beach. "Fui a la playa por un dia" - I went to the beach for a day. - shakedowndave, Jun 4, 2011

"For the day" indicates an amount of time which is slightly ambiguous. However, it is a duration of time. "One day" means no duration is given, only that the beach was visited.

In English, I would say... "I went to the beach for the day".

That doesn't mean for the entire day, necessarily. All it means is that I went to the beach for some period of time that day. You could even say, "I spent the day at the beach", and still not mean the entire day... but probably most of it.
