Mi perro se comió la tarea

I was searching for the Spanish version of the common phrase "My dog ate my homework." This is usually (but not always) rendered as "Mi perro se comió la tarea." Why comerse and not just comer?

Comerse means something like to devour, or to eat up the entire thing.

Why is it "ate up" and not just "ate" in English sometimes? Same reason: to indicate that it is totally consumed.
