So could:

Él está decidido a no aflojar el ritmo.

mean

He is determined not to slow down (or slacken the pace).

Is ritmo often used for pace?

I've heard ritmo used a few times for pace:

Hazlo a tu ritmo - do it at your own pace.

A buen ritmo - at a good pace

and:

A este ritmo, nunca vamos a acabar - at this rate, we'll never finish.
