horrifying; spine-chilling, hair-raising etc

but could estremecedor be translated as scathing?

Isn't scathing more like cruel and harming? My Collins translates it as mordaz.

NO, I would certainly not use it that way, scathing, new word for mewink

estremecerse is to shudder , so any of the above are perfect.
