The food is all gone, in that format, but it means we're out of food.

It could also be talking about someone "eating/finishing his/her food"

He means in the way that it is written. A more literal translation is 'the food has run out'. In British, you'd likely say 'we've run out of food and in American, what Rey said. In Spanish, things often just happen on their own, without it being... - afowen, Jun 3, 2011
