Just to say 'hi'?

Just to say 'hi'?

I'm trying to say that a man calls his old friend just to say hi. Is there a Spanish equivalent for this? I'm sure it won't be a direct translation...just to ask how he is (although it sounds a bit too long), just to catch up, etc...

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
