Ian this is just a wireless adapter, it's not a modem. It requires someone else's internet connection to work, most people have one of these inside their computer already. - rabbitwho, Jun 1, 2011
No it's not a modem but allows your PC to connect in a cafe for example. Or if you are lucky to an ISP that is not password protected. - ian-hill, Jun 1, 2011

I've never learned that word but i put it in the translater and it said mochila, I hope it helps but try asking for a "mochila" in a Vodafone, Meteor, etc., its a long shot but try. grin

Mine was free because i got one with a modem. But i've seen cheap pay and go ones for ten euros, I dont know much about them but thats cheap right.

Strange that question.

I bought a new laptop that has no WiFi built in (I didn't check).

I will need such a dongle when I go to England soon.

I want to use it with my brother's Virgin connection.

So how much does one cost there?

I just found this Think I can afford that.

Sorry Ian, I've just started to look into this today. - lagartijaverde, Jun 1, 2011
you don't need a dongle, you can buy external WiFi thingys - rabbitwho, Jun 1, 2011
oh a dongle is an external modem but what i'm talking about is an external wifi reciever http://www.zis4u.com/images/accessories-moto-wlusb-228x374.jpg - rabbitwho, Jun 1, 2011
Wow Ian, that link you posted is a completely different thing to what Birdy is looking for, I can't beleive that's called a Dongle too! - rabbitwho, Jun 1, 2011

We were looking into getting one but they're so expensive we decided not to in the end. We went with a landline with Jazztell, which I still thought was too expensive and didn't want to get, it's 30 euro a month, it includes a "free" phone line, which I resent paying for since I don't know a single person with a landline in Spain and my flatmates use it all the time!

Generally, if you've never used a dongle, you'll be surprised to find how slow the internet is, even when you pay for the high speed, and how often the decide not to work for no reason. Sorry I can't help you with prices or specific information/translation.

Hey, I found this on google:

http://www.jazztelsemueve.com/internet_tarifas.html

Looks like you can just ask for "mobile internet" and they'll know you mean a dongle.

They also call it a "módem USB"

I can't beleive the slow interent only costs 10 euro a month, I could hit my flatmate who insisted that I pay for fast internet I neither want nor need because she needed it. - rabbitwho, Jun 1, 2011
really good Url, thanks for that. - lagartijaverde, Jun 1, 2011

In rabbitwhos link link text why can't I see a straightforward pay as you go sim?

I'm sure it's me but I don't seem very bright at the moment

All I need is a phonecall and sms card, nothing more.

Seeing we're on the subject any recommendations for the best UK pay as you go sim card? There are so many I don't know which to choose. My new phone is unlocked.

I have been with Tesco for a few years now, cheap and cheerful, good customer service, Definitely no complaints from me. - MaryMcc, Jun 1, 2011

What you really need is a USB modem, as rabbitwho already said. I have one like this to use at work when I travel, but it's a monthly service. I'm not sure you can get a non contract service. Maybe you can rent one there.

You need locals to answer this.alt text

You can get non-contract ones here in Ecuador that you prepay in a way similar to cellphones (you can use the same phone cards for both); you can pay for a day, a week, etc. - lorenzo9, Jun 1, 2011

I see that they have changed the definition of dongle: I was wondering why on Earth you would want to buy one in Spain.

Maybe I'm completely on the wrong track here. I have a MacBookPro with wifi installed. My problem is how to find a short term provider. I was under the impression that the dongle approach would get me a provider, is that wrong?

I'll be in Menorca at irregular intervals and don't know how to get some provider to connect the wifi to.

Any advice appreciated.
