Please update your profile so it is clear whether you are a native English or Spanish speaker. Thanks! - gintar77, May 30, 2011

Seems to me that you're a native Spanish speaker, bassagui. Am I right? Anyway, you say "ask a question" for hacer una pregunta. Just "ask" works too, just take note of the other uses for "ask" that are similar to those of pedir.

In English you can only "ask" a question. I know it sounds silly if you translate into Spanish as "preguntar una pregunta", but that is the way it works in English. grin

Thank you so much! - bassagui, May 30, 2011
that is definitely most common and for beginners is perfect gintar but technically there are a few other options, start with a question, that begs a question, I will a pose a question etc etc :) - Kiwi-Girl, May 31, 2011
Yes, of course. What I meant to say was that "hacer una pregunta" was translated as "to ask a question" not "to make a question." - gintar77, May 31, 2011

Another thing we say, but which is used much more rarely, is 'pose' to pose a question.

He posed a question. etc

But ask is definitely the normal way to say it smile

You make a question, not ask. Hacer una pregunta.

I´m afraid "make a question" would then be Spanglish, Jeezzle. Thanks anyway. - bassagui, May 30, 2011
Jeezzle just thought that you were asking how to say it in Spanish. He did not realize you are learning English. - gintar77, May 30, 2011
