Hola, Ken,

El jardinero devolvió la pelota.

The gardener gave back the ball.

That is the past or preterit tense. But depending on what you want to say, you could use numerous other tenses.

Check Conjugations under the menu head "MORE" at the top of this site's page.

put in the word devolver

devolvería

Yes It does depend much on what you are trying to say :) - FELIZ77, May 30, 2011
Unfortunately, it depends entirely on the question that is from my instructor! And is it gardner or outfielder? I'm soooo confused!!!! - dipietrok, May 30, 2011
Ken, the way you have spelled it, the word means "gardener". I'm sorry, I don't know how to say "outfielder" in Spanish. Why don't you ask that as a separate query? Devolver is irregular, just as volver is. If you need to know for a test, learn all the - NancyGrace, May 30, 2011

Everything except what's in the blank is from the instructor. But she says it is outfielder. That's the only reason I asked. Thanks for all the help and advice! - dipietrok, May 30, 2011

Jardinero means gardener, outfielder, or overalls. In this context, outfielder makes the most sense.

What tenses are you learning in class?
