How to use "Yo" and "Lo"

What is the difference between saying yo and lo to mean I?

Yo is used to mean I in contrast to someone else.
Lo is not used to mean I.

Ya lo entiendo mejor = I understand it better now ( or I already understand it better)

Lo he entendido = I have understood it
