The bottom picture is from England. Don't worry, that's how they all drive there. - Beatrice-Codder, May 28, 2011

It is illegal in many places for a good reason.

Ya, but the law is not tough enough - 0043ad50, May 28, 2011
The problem is probbaly not the law but the implementation of it laws are next to useless unless the police enforce them consistently - FELIZ77, May 28, 2011
In my area, people can only be stopped for talking/texting if there's also another infraction -- speeding, etc. - babs_irish, May 28, 2011

I never use my mobile phone while driving I always stop somewhere and turn the engine off before using my phone. Honestly, I have considered using a Bluetooth Hands-Free system although I have not got around to buying one.

There are many ways in which a person can be distracted while driving eg adjusting radio controls, air conditionig controls, a parent worrying about their children fighting in the back of teh car and it only takes a moment to take your eyes of the raod and anything could happen! confused rolleyes grrr

I admit to being shocked how common a sight it is to see people still using their mobile phones while driving on main raods and I have to admit many of those whom I have seen have been trademen who should know better! mad angry cool mad

I am equally alarmed to see pedestrians using mobile phones while crossing the road and wonder how long it will be before they carelessly cause an accident infact, many of them are accidents waiting to happen!

Texting?

Honestly, I used to. But not anymore.

I will occasionally look at a text at a red light and give a quick "yes" or "no" answer. But for anything else, I wait until I'm where I'm going.

Talking on the phone?

Yes... only with hands-free. The bluetooth in the iPhone automatically connects with my car and the voices come out of the speakers, and the mic is in the rear-view mirror. Pretty common now-a-days, I think.

I can't text anyway so I had it turned off on my phone. Of course, now no one can text me except the phone company. So I know any texts I get are just advertisements and stuff. If people want to get in touch with me they have to do it the old fashioned way and call my cell phone.

Oh, my goodness. I think that's what we used to call "car phones." :-) - babs_irish, May 28, 2011
Well, the one I have now is five years old, but it works fine. I rememeber when we had a bag phone and the antenna pulled out really long. You had to stop to make calls on those phones. - sanlee, May 28, 2011

Texting and talking on the phone have been recently been outlawed in the State of Maryland. I'm not sure it's made a great deal of difference.

Yes, I do talk on the phone while driving. Mea culpa. (They say confession is good for the soul. I don't feel better yet.)

This survey is pretty interesting. It itemizes dangerous distractions. I'm wondering just what the "object" is that's being held in #1, since phones, etc. are itemized elsewhere in the list. grin

Talking is the main distraction with these devices, as much as with the manual controls. Plenty of accidents happen because a driver was talking to a passenger.

I turn off my cell phone when in the car. Call me old-fashioned, but there was nothing important enough to distract me while driving before cell phones, and I don't expect that will change for me.

Today's drivers are so distracted, I have to pay even more attention to the road and other drivers while I'm driving. I've avoided being involved in several accidents that way.

Texting while driving is illegal in many places, but that has caused those who want to continue doing it to hold their phone lower so it can't be seen. This takes their eyes even farther away from the road.

Have I ever done it, yes, but it scared the crap out of me and I've stopped.

Ups, I always try to be a careful driver but yes, I do that sometimes, even in the highway, I even text while driving, omg, how fool I am, I won't do that again.

Thanks for scaring me Marsh, sometimes that's the only way to avoid accidents.

I was driving in Houston one day and I saw a woman reading a book while driving. Of all the places to do this? Houston? Really lady? She must have been a student on the way to a major exam or something, whatever the case she was irresponsible.

I'm waiting patiently for GOOGLE to finish building the cars that drive themselves, then I can talk on the phone, text, or even take a nap and never have to worry about it.

I don´t even have texting on my cell phone.

Also, I´ve noticed more and more school zones are restricting cell phone usage. The signs are very clearly posted.
