Cuatro y Cuarto which is right

In lesson 1.8 the time It is 4:15. Both in the flashcard and recall the answer is son las cuatro y cuarto
Spelingl difference 4 is spell C U A T R O, fifteen in this time is spelled C U A R T O.
Son las CUATRO y CUARTO Is this an error in spelling or is it suppose to be spelled differently in this case. I'm a little confused.

This is perfectly correct - son las cuatro y cuarto. It is four and a quarter which is correct in Spanish. - margaretcorwin, May 27, 2011

cuarto = 1/4 of an hour (15 minutes)

You could say "Son las cuatro y quince". But, "Son las cuatro y cuarto" is like saying "it's quarter past four" instead of "it's four fifteen" in English.
Just like 4:30 could be "Son las cuatro y treinta" for "it's four thirty" or "Son las cuatro y media" for "it's half past four".
