Best word for hatch

Anybody have a good word for "hatch"? I was sitting there with two native speakers today and I said "salir". They were both very certain there was a specific verb (better than salir) for the act of hatching (from an egg), but couldn't think of it.

Incubar came up but was shot down because incubation and hatching are different. I will run "empollar" by them tomorrow and see if the lightbulb goes off.

the definitions in RAE seem almost the same for the two words, the act of hatching or sacar pollos - pacofinkler, May 26, 2011

Empollar or incubar come up as definitions. I suggest you follow the link for more information.

One day ago, I posted avestruces incubando on the drop-one-take-one thread, which Heidita moderates and corrects regularly. No corrections were offered, for what it's worth. smile

That doesn't mean it's right, and I did the same searches posted here and found nothing better. - pesta, May 26, 2011

I found salir del cascarón in our phrasebook. It's not a dedicated verb, but seems to capture the concept directly.
