Suggestions - the best way to start learning a language
Hi there,
I was wondering if anyone had advice on the best way to go about learning a new language. I thought that a formal class environment would be best, but my daughter's class at the local university requires a large amount of time and work in order to keep up to speed. (not to mention most of the students are rather young) If anyone has any suggestions for I would be very grateful. Thank you.

Well, I think it depends on the person as everyone has different learning styles and time constraints. For me I prefer the class environment, even though I love Spanish, I'm really not dedicated enough to self study, I find the class environment very motivating. But I agree with you it can take up a lot of your time. I spend most weekends learning for tests and doing homework assignments, but in my opinion I've learnt a lot in a short space of time.
If you feel you are dedicated to learning Spanish, Span¡shD!ct is a wonderful learning environment and the people are extremely friendly and helpful. I would start with the videos in the Learn section first, and perhaps find a friend who is interested in learning Spanish as well, it might help to get you motivated in the beginning. Hope this helps.
The best way to learn Spanish (or any language) is to find a method that is both fun and challenging for you. If you do a search, you will find a ton of great threads on this and related topics.
Some people need the structure and consistency of a classroom setting. For others, this is neither possible nor practical. There are so many different ways to incorporate a new language into your life. I would suggest finding two or three different methods that work for you. This could include studying Spanish grammar books, watching Spanish T.V. and having conversations with Spanish speaking friends. For others it might be spending time in this forum, watching the videos and attending a class once a week.
The best thing is to find a few activities you enjoy and consistently incorporating them into your life. I think it is important to use more than one tool in your learning process. No matter how perfect a method is, there will always be gaps or things we don't understand. If we are using multiple sources, it is easier to have a well rounded learning process. I have discovered that when I don't understand something, such as a grammar rule in a book, that if I look to another source, my questions are answered.
