I figured that colloquial phrase would be difficult to translate. The verbs that directly translate from "pick up" do not communicate the idea conveyed in English.
If I understand the phrase correctly, you intend to say the friends resume the relationship or discussion as if they spoke with you yesterday.
If that is the case, the only verb that I know for that is "reanudar".
"estos amigos reanudan..."
Maybe a native speaker can more closely translate that idea, or perhaps there is a colloquial phrase in Spanish for that.

The meaning on pick up depends on the context, but "estos amigos .......... como si hubieran hablado ayer contigo " is the rest
